Call for Innovations

The Ministry of Water and Sanitation and Irrigation seeks applications for the Iko-Safi Innovation Award on the topic of “Sanitation for All”.The award seeks to recognize innovative solutions that promote access to sanitation resources and services that make a difference in promoting healthy, safe, and productive lives for all. Submissions for the award must be innovative, contextually grounded, practical and designed in response to on-the-ground needs and relevant to sanitation systems strengthening.

Innovative solutions may target individuals, families, communities, urban planners, service providers, or sanitation infrastructure, networks, and systems. Solutions may include but are not limited to: services, models, tools, or advocacy strategies intended to improve overall access to sanitation services and that apply a deeper understanding of users (customers/providers) needs when designing programs, services, and products/interventions.

Priorities

  • Innovations that address current inequities in access to sanitation;
  • Innovations that prioritize marginalized populations, considering specifically those marginalized by their physical/intellectual disability, economic status, religion, age, marital status, gender, profession, location, literacy or lack thereof;
  • Innovation that consider Design Principles of:
    • Design with the User
    • Understand the existing ecosystem
    • Design for scale
    • Build for sustainability
    • Use open standards, open data, open source, open innovation (*if/where possible)
    • Reuse and improve (*if/where possible)
    • Do no harm

Award Categories

The innovators include individuals or groups in the sanitation sector, ranging from primary, secondary to tertiary sector. The innovators could be individuals or groups involved in collecting sanitation raw materials and/or making them into finished products. The innovators could also be in the tertiary of service provision. Sanitation industry innovators usually possess practical innovation skills in sanitation.

The innovators include university or technical innovation students who are studying or majoring in sanitation fields and have come up with an innovation or a practical solution to innovation challenges. The innovators should have a letter from their institution and other relevant testimonial like the school Identification card.

 

The innovators are community groups or individuals in the community who may or may not be in

the sanitation industry and are not students but have come up with sanitation innovations or

practical solutions to sanitation challenges.

 

The innovators include individuals or groups in the sanitation sector who are non-Kenyan. The

innovation sector range from primary, secondary to tertiary innovations. The innovators could be

individuals or groups involved in collecting sanitation raw materials and/or making them into

finished products. The innovators could also be in the tertiary of service provision. Sanitation

industry innovators usually possess practical innovation skills in sanitation.

Award Information

The Iko-Safi Innovation Award committee will shortlist innovators to participate in an interactive workshop to present their solutions/case studies to a panel of sanitation experts. Three finalists in each category will be selected to pitch their innovations and awarded at the Gala event of the Kenya Sanitation Conference 2019 that will be held in October 28-31, 2019 in Nairobi.

Eligibility Criteria

Iko-safi Innovation Innovation Award is open to individuals, community-based organizations, non-profit organizations, for-profit enterprises, national and county government agencies, academic and technical institutions.Submissions for the award must be innovative, contextually grounded, and practical; addressing a clearly defined problem in response to on-the-ground needs and must be relevant to sanitation. Submissions will be evaluated for originality, sustainability and replicability.
